Hi everyone. I've recently found this coin while coin roll hunting. you can find more info about it at http://www.varietyvista.com/. Does anyone know how many have been found and what they're worth? Thanks for any and all replies.

Brent, it definately looks like you found number six. Cool!!! The emails are flying all around the northeast about this find this morning. See the thread in the Finders Keepers forum on this website. I also reported your find on cointalk.org. I have also seen your posts on at least two other forums.
A 1988 Lincoln Cent RDV-006 sold for $157.55 on ebay.

As this variety gains popularity the prices should go up. I do have my reservations about whether this variety will gain the popularity of the 1992 P & D close AM's. If it does, then your looking at $1000 or more.

I've notice a pretty significant difference in mine
and Patrick's coin (the one on varietyvista.com).
Look at mine where the arrow is pointing
(under the top of the curve). There is "tail" going
left and right, but in Patrick's it stays inside of
the curve of the G. It may not mean anything, but
it could be a different die or something.

What is this ribbon thing? Did you notice it?

I did, I don't know what it is. I don't see it on the other two dies. I suggested he send it to Dr. Wiles for further examination.

I'm not sure what is is either. Car10, Dr. Wiles wrote me back this morning. I'll be sending it to him ASAP.
Do you noticed what I was talking about?

Today, AgCollector is reporting the finding of his fifth example of this variety. This fifth find of his makes, by my count, the tenth reported, and him, the finder of fully HALF of all reported specimens of this specific variety. It also keeps the average rate of roughly one of them being found each month since Jeff Snow's initial discovery in May of 2007. He has promised to post photos shortly.

it looks like my 1988 RDV-006 on Coneca's main page is on the chopping block and will soon disappear :squigglemouth:
so this is a FYI if anyone is interested before its gone - its about 2/3 the way down the page
you can see James Wiles and my name in micro print

You might drop off the CONECA main page but you're the first person to find this variety, and that won't soon be forgotten!

A Question for eveyone finding a 1988 or 1988D RDV-006. ( I believe that would be : AgCollector , Steven , car10 , brefos77 and Snow ) Approximatly how many 1988 / 1988Ds have each of you looked through in the last year to find that variety?

...Approximately how many 1988 / 1988Ds have each of you looked through in the last year to find that variety?
All of them! Seriously though, I've found 5 out of 400,000 total cents. How many of them were 1988, I can't exactly say although I would guess it at between 5,000 and 10,000 1988's.

Thanks agCollector for responding with your info. I am trying to do the math on % of probability of finding one of these rare varieties. Actually I am not crunching the #s instead my kid is doing the math for practice. We are already having fun with it.
To be clear , you have found one in 400,000 various memorial cents from circulation? y/n? (ie you are not searching only 88 and 88-D rolls.)
Input from the others finding this variety will assist in getting the most accurate guess as to probability.

It's hard to say. What is the percentage of 1988's remaining in circulation? I average about 5000 cents per week during the fall and winter months and about half that during the spring and summer. I've been doing it for four or five years but only started looking for that specific variety last summer. It took a few months of searching before I finally found one. I'm just glad I didn't give up hope out of frustration. Keep looking, you'll find one. It took much longer for me to find my first 1999 wide AM than it did my first 1988 RDV-006. I would like nothing more than to see everyone here at LCR to be able to say that the found one.

It does seem, for some reason, that they are concentrated in the northeast based on the locations of reported finds to date.

Actually I have found 5 out of 400,000 various cents and yes, they're all from circulation, no 1988 rolls.

I have picked up a few rolls of BU 1988 cents to check with no luck. That will throw the nubers off a bit.

When I first heard about it, I added it to my list of coins to sort out while roll hunting. It was only a few days and less than 100 1988 cents before I found mine. My first reaction was, "Aw, crap. If I found one this fast, it can't be rare at all." But so far I'm wrong. I hope more people find them, but I want it to stay low numbered for the sake of scarcity.

How many have you searched since then without finding a second?
