1990 Reverse error

I noticed this one day lookin thru my coins and couldnt find anything on this. i posted it on other forums and recieved mixed answers and nobody really knows. Some pix it looks like its countersunk but its actually coming out of the coin and its not a gas bubble. Tried to pressed it out. Dont work!

Very interesting mem you have there.
It sure looks like a mint mistake of some sort, but exactly what... I do not know.
Are you sure it isn't someone trying to sneak across the memorial?

lol. That what I was thinkning. Maybe some guy didnt move out of the way fast enough when they took the pic..lolol..i pretty much threw out a chance of die clash just becuz its comin up not into the die. and it really doesnt look like a die chip. Who knows?

Ill just keep posting it and waiting. I even sent a pic to Ken Potter ( error and variety guy) and he really doesnt know

You would be surprised at the amount of stuff that gets in the striking chamber. The biggest problem occurs when a die falls a part, splinters, breaks or shatters. If even a small portion is left, this can indent the replacement die or affect the surrounding dies.

More than likely what you are seeing is a struck through object that has damaged the die, leaving two dents which show as raised areas on the coin. Recently, I have seen a 1848 cent that was struck through what appeared to be a stretched out spring.

Then, we just had Mike Diamond's discovery of the Delaware quarter with a counter die clash. This involved a piece of wayward material that got caught in the striking chamber and was struck at least twice by the die involved.

While die damage such as yours is not common, it does happen. I am not to sure if it would command a premium, unless of course it was a silver dollar which would equate to a VAM number, wghich would bring extra bucks.

Jason, I do not think I could put this coin aside until I found the answer. Certainly there is some sort of pattern on there that could give us a clue...?
But I am always seeing things............... that seem to out of place, that is.

There is no other sign of clash anywhere on it, so Im lost. I have it in a flip for now anyway. I put everything in them if im not sure..lol


funny!.. I just notice in the last pic that it looks like lincoln is even kinda turned toward it looking like he noticed someone there..lol..

That area is prime for remnants of clashes. Even though there may not be any other signs of a clash, there are indications of die polishing. In this case, my guess would be a double clash with movement between clashes.
