So, I typically haven't checked cents from the 80's aside from the big ones (ie 80,83,84) and I feel as though I've been selling myself short. After finding my first 1980's RPM, I figured why not look for some of the early class II + VI and class VI doubled dies? I thought I would have an easy time discerning the difference. Now I'm staring down the barrel of this baby and can't tell with 100% accuracy if it is in fact a doubled die or the result of die wear that's spreading the devices. All help is appreciated.

Sorry, got to vote "not a DDO" on this one. The '80's doubled dies can be tough with all of the plating issues, but a lot of the '84's will jump out at you. Look for extra thickness on the lower right half of the 8 in the date, a "down slanting" ramp on the crossbar of the 4 and or strong extra thickness on first three letters of LIBERTY (especially the L). If you look at enough '84's, when you find a ddo, it will be pretty obvious. -
The 80's DDO's is something that is a pain for me too. I can feel your pain. We will be happy to have a quick look at anything that concerns you, and we can go from there.Bob Piazza
