Last night I found this 1953-D/D (/D?) while flipping through some 50's wheats. It doesn't look just like the '53-D/D that is pictured within The Resource as there seems to be more separation on the bottom serif. It may be just me, but it also seems like there could be a 3rd "D" under there. What are your thoughts? The two photos are at 63x, and 133x.
This too is a Wexler WRPM 001. It's hard to tell by looking at the 953 to determine if there is MD going on. The coin is appears to be worn. Nice find.

Please clarify what you are looking for in the 953, and define "MD"? This one is not listed in the value guide within The Resource. Any idea what it might list for as an EF?
Usually when you see a Mint Mark(MM) with doubling as yours is, the MM sometimes exibits Machine Doubling(MD). I look at the date and letter's on the obverse to see if there are sign's of MD. In the case of your coin, it is hard to tell due to being worn. Your's could be a D/D/D, but I would wait for other opinions. There does appear to be a small amount of MD on the 953 but it's hard to tell. As far as value goes, I wouldn't put a price on any of my coin's so I couldn't tell you. Again nice find.

While value is one item of interest, more so I am curious about the rarity of this variety. Is it unusual that both of the RPMs that I found last night came out of <500 wheats from the 1950's, or is that a reasonable population?
With the location of the mintmark, there is no doubt that this is 1953 D/D rpm 1. It is a top 100 rpm. It is however, very common. I would say that it is worth $2-$5. I have one, and I have seen several for sale.

that is normal ..
When you get to middle to late 30s on many variety hunters like to aim for MS63 or higher and even get a few different stages.
